Dennis vs. Dennis

I only just recently learned that there are two completely different Dennis the Menaces. The American one and the UK one. One is troublesome, but well-meaning, and the other is...well...basically a bully and the archetype for a serial killer ;). As Wikipedia describes him, he likes picking on and torturing a gang of 'softies' (effeminate, well-behaved boys). Basically, the nerds. It seems that he's since evolved into something a little bit more modern based on the recent TV series. His main rivals are still the nerds (so it appears) but at the very least the character seems to have evolved into something more. This kind of interests me since there are a lot of cherished, childhood characters that we'd look at today and say "holy shit, that's what they were like back then?" What are some of yours? ~B Be sure to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter, eh ;) Share/Bookmark

  1. Childhood characters: Tom and Jerry. 🙂

    1. I need to re-watch some of those. There was a lot of attempted mouse murder if I recall?

  2. From the mouth of babes… Beautiful art, Brandon.

    1. Thanks so much, Mark!

  3. Sounds about right.

    1. The Sex Pistols were more badass than the Ramones…just sayin’

      1. True, but the Ramones were more fun!

  4. Weird they both started at the same time too

    1. Yeah, that one’s still weirding me out considering they apparently had no idea.

  5. I love Looney Tunes myself and still find it strange there is a cartoon that has actual plots compared to the old 7-8 minute shows I used to watch. It surprises me that I thought it was quite good (CGI roadrunner shorts helped a lot, those are my favorites)

    1. I still love the classic Looney Tunes cartoons. Though not bad, the updated “full” shows have nothing on them, IMO.

  6. I saw the recent TMNT special, Turtles Forever which pits the old 90s turtles with the newer Turtles, and all I can say is WOW. I completely forgot how annoyingly goofy those old turtle cartoons were. Especially now that I’m reading the old black and white comics from the mid 80s. The 90s cartoon was a completely ridiculous departure from the source material, its almost worse than anything Michael Bay could come up with (yeah, I went there).

    1. Love that movie. And yeah, it’s true. Bay’s movie will still come out smelling better that that 90’s crap.

  7. I just learned yesterday that the 3 fat bakers in Maurice Sendak’s “In The Night Kitchen” that look like fat Hitlers, really are fat Hitlers. Sendak lost a lot of family in the Holocaust and he really had nightmares about being baked in an oven. This is not a joke. Seriously. Look it up.

    1. Wow…just read up on it on Wikipedia. That’s really interesting.

  8. Proof that being mean and British is so much more charming than being mean and American!

    1. Yeah, it comes across way more douchy if you’re American.

  9. I love the Russian version of Winnie the Pooh – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqdiEUp6s4E – which is totally different from (and exactly the same as) the one I grew up with in America.

    1. It is exactly as you said – totally different yet exactly the same. I like how different the art is. Very cool.

  10. I grew up with the English Dennis, then moved to the states at 8, and wondered who the hell that little pansy bugging old people was. He’s not a menace, he’s maybe slightly mischievous at most.

    1. Lol, completely agreed.

  11. The American Dennis definitely was never much of a menace. More like, mild irritation.

    1. The UK knows how to make a menace.

  12. I guess Dennis the Menace sounds better than Dennis the Irritant!

    1. Or Dennis the “Mistake” 😉

  13. Wow, two Dennis the Menaces? Mind Blown!

    1. I didn’t believe the person who told me at first.

  14. Well his mom is pretty hot.

  15. Always wondered if his mom was a MILF
