I’ve actually finished the first God of War now…the remastered PS3 collection finally convinced me to play it. Perhaps I was too hard on it here. It IS supposed to be a bastardization of greek mythology, and I’m pretty sure everyone in those stories is a giant douche…but it did get me thinking. So many games today are mass murder simulators with a thinly veiled plot or fantasy/sci-fi context to extricate the experience from reality, categorized under the innocent sounding genre of “action” games. Movies do it too of course, and have been doing it much longer. I don’t mind personally, I tend to consume a LOT of this “action” genre…I guess it’s one of the few typical “man” things about me. And hey, if someone is going to get their aggression out, better (for most) to do it in a virtual world…but I can see in my head, an alien species, watching us from Mars or some shit, marveling at these psychotic violent fantasies we seem to live vicariously through as a society, and thinking “Damn, these humans be FUCKED up”. Aliens talk like that, right?

Perhaps they learned it from Will Smith in ID4.

There are a handful of games that do good, thoughtful art without using it as an excuse for violence – Ico, Beyond Good and Evil, and all those point-click adventure games and Myst clones.

One of the big reasons I think inFamous is better than Prototype is that inFamous gives you the option of not being a psychotic mass-murdering supervillain.

It’s true…Beyond Good and Evil was fantastic. I hope we get the sequel to that one day, it’s supposedly in the works.

I’ve been meaning to get inFamous…second one of those coming as well :) .
